A Once you've connected the VGA cable and the monitor to your laptop, you probably also need to activate the external monitor output by using the "Fn" (Function) key along with one of the 'F' keys along the top of the keyboard that has a little monitor graphic on it or the letters LCD/CRT. This should activate the external video output.
